Cyperus rotundus

Cyperus rotundus is widely distributed perennial sedge having small edible nutlike tubers. It is one of most invsasive weeds known. It has been called "The worlds worst weed" as it is known as weed in over 90 countries and infest over 50 crops worldwide. Its Tuber is used raw or cooked A very strong flavour when freshly harvested, said to resemble 'Vick's VapoRub', the tubers become milder if they are allowed to dry

Despite its bad reputation, it also has several beneficial uses. It have been used internally and externally. It is light, bitter, aromatic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, anthelminthic, galactogogue, emmenogogue and nervine tonic. The tubers are useful as infusion  in fever, diarrhoea, dysentery, dyspepsia, vomiting and cholera. Fresh tubers are applied on the breast in the form of paste or plaster as galactagogue. The tubers of the plant are used as anthelmintic, antihistaminic, antiemetic, antipyretic, hypotensive, smooth-muscle relaxant and emmenagogue in uterine complaints. The plant has also been reported to have antimalarial, tranquillizing action as well as hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory activity.
